B-4: Mrs. Leighty's Third Grade Classroom

B-4 image: It's a field trip...

Welcome!

Welcome to Room B-4! I am excited to be your teacher this year. Third grade will be filled with many wonderful adventures and learning experiences. I work very closely with my grade-level partner, Ms. Fox, and I love working with parent volunteers, too. One of the highlights of my school year is putting on a class musical for the entire school. You may not think that you can sing or dance on stage, but you can! In the same way, I hope to teach you lots of new things about math and reading this year.

Curriculum Notes

B-4/B-1 Rotation
All third graders study writing with Ms. Fox, and they all study math with me. So we switch groups on a regular basis. By sharing students in this way, we feel we get to know everybody better. This helps us generally, and it really helps on field trips and during other special events.

The Specials
Please note that this year there are some important changes with the Specials. The Physical Education schedule is being reduced, and the Art program is being expanded.

Challenge
Ms. Kraybill is our Challenge instruction again this year, offering alternative or supplemental instruction to qualifying students – probably about one hour a week in the afternoons. If you have a question about who qualifies and why, please talk to her. She will most often work with Challenge students in our classroom. She may also sometimes take these students to Room A-1b for a separate learning activity.

Special Education/PD Center
As with Ms. Kraybill and the Challenge students, at our school there are teachers and staff members who work with our L.D. students (that is, our mild-moderate learning disabled students) or P.D. students (our physically disabled students). They will sometimes work in our classrooms and sometimes in their own rooms (A-0 or A-1a).

Bromwell Eagles Always Care
The B.E.A.C. program, in past years, was our school's character-education initiative. The B.E.A.C. committee was a team of parents and teachers who helped integrate character ed programming into our classroom activities, usually on a weekly basis. Many of the parents who have spear-headed this work in the past, however, have now moved on -- as have the principals and teachers who were involved. We hope the program can make a comeback, and we are particularly interested in finding parent volunteers to help bring it into classrooms this year.

All About Ms. Leighty

This is my fifth year at Bromwell and my tenth year teaching in DPS. I have experienced teaching grades 3, 4, and 5. I have a four-year-old daughter, Madison, and a son that is only seven months old! They are the joy in my life, and I have truly found that becoming a parent has made me a better teacher.

I am a Colorado native, having graduated from Pomona High School and Regis University. I received a Master's Degree in Literacy from Lesley University in 2001. Last year, I earned an Educational Specialist Degree at the University of Colorado in Denver. I proudly serve on the Math, Technology, Professional Development, and Million Word committees at Bromwell.

And From Our Principal...

Ms. Leighty brings an impressive understanding of the Everyday Mathematics curriculum to our school, and is able to effectively teach that curriculum to her students. She exemplifies professionalism and collaborates well with other staff!

Student Articles

Read Alouds
by Andrew Wise

Our read alouds are one of my favorite parts of the day! I like it because it’s a time when the whole class gets to sit down and listen to the teacher or a parent read. I also like it because we get to talk about the book and share what we think about the book. I’m really glad we have read alouds.

Read aloud books so far this year:
Frindle by Andrew Clements
Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key by Jack Gantos
Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell

Weather
by Elizabeth Hannifin

On the first of October, the condensation was wild. It was on the car and in the air. We made a thermometer in class. It showed us where the hottest place in school was. Stratus, cumulus and cirrus clouds are all examples of condensation. So snow, rain, hail and sleet are precipitation. Evaporation is when heat or energy heats up the water and is transformed into air. It’s called water vapor. Evaporation, condensation and precipitation go in the order in the water cycle like I have listed. My classmates and I have learned what is listed but there’s still more.
