MYSTERY FILES
The Fourth Grade Files of Felonies and Foul Play
(A Mystery Novel Project)
For this project, you will read a mystery novel and then create a product to share information. Specifically, you will create a special file folder
that will include a book report
as well as a creative artifact
of your choosing.
THE FOLDER:
Use an ordinary file folder. If you prefer, you can buy a file folder in a special color at some office supply stores. Write your name on the tab at the top of the folder, and on the outside front, write “The Fourth Grade File of Felonies and Foul Play.” You can also decorate or illustrate the outside of the file in any way you choose.
When the folder is opened and laid flat, there are two sections. Your report should be stapled or glued to the left section (the inside left cover) and your artifact (the evidence) should be glued or stapled to the right section (the inside right cover, with the tab).
THE REPORT:
Your file folder must include a report. The report can be written as a narrative with paragraphs, or as an extremely detailed list. It can be typed or written legibly, and must demonstrate proper spelling and punctuation. The report must present the following information...
1. The title of your mystery book
2. The author’s name - and illustrator’s name, if there is one
3. The mystery - what crime is involved in this mystery? Describe it clearly and completely. If there is no specific crime in the story, what exactly is the mystery all about?
4. The characters - name the important characters in the story and give each a brief description.
5: The setting - where does the story take place? Describe the setting and explain how it is a part of the story.
6. Important events in the story - rather than retell the entire novel, describe key events in the story and tell how these events create interest and excitement for readers.
7. Your reflection - in conclusion, what is your response to this novel? What did you like best about the story and the characters, and what will you always remember about the book?
THE EVIDENCE:
Your file folder must include evidence in the form of a creative art project or interesting artifact related to the story. For example, you could create a wanted poster, a map of the setting, samples of fingerprints, photos of the scene of the crime, evidence baggies containing other clues, or any else that is interesting and fun.
EXTRA CREDIT:
1. Illustrate a scene from your novel in a painting or a comic page, or enact a scene in a home-made video.
2. Read a second book by the same author (or another book in the same series) and list differences and similarities between the two books on a large (5 x7) notecard attached to the back (the outside right cover) of your file folder.
3. Create five math puzzles related to the characters and events of your novel.
4. Write your own One-Minute Mystery, or other mystery story or poem.
5. Suggest your own extra credit idea to me!
