B-6: Ms. Keys' & Ms. Kraybill's Second Grade Classroom

B-6 kids image: Those B-6 kids -- ya gotta love 'em!

Welcome to our class! We have a great year of learning and fun waiting for you in Room B-6. As it says in the picture above, "B-6 is the best!"

We hope that you come to our class after having a great summer. Perhaps you bicyled and swam at the pool. Perhaps you spent lots of time playing with friends or traveling. No matter what you have done, we will want to hear all about it on the first day of school.

Our classroom is special, because there are two teachers. Ms. Kraybill teaches literacy in the morning and Ms. Keys teaches math, science and social studies in the afternoon. It's a fun arrangement!

We can't wait to meet you on the first day of school. For your parents, there is more information on this page about how our classroom works.

What are second-graders really like?

A typical second-grader is beginning to calm down a bit. He or she is learning to concentrate and focus more in class, and finds more satisfaction in doing good schoolwork, too. Students at this age are becoming better at reasoning and thinking critically. They are also learning the real ins and outs of group membership in the classroom and on the playground. Children in second grade develop a greater sense of responsibility. It's a very important year, full of developmental and academic milestones.

There's lots of review in second grade, so that students truly master all the skills presented by their first grade teachers. Your child will also learn to recognize familiar words more rapidly, read and spell new words, add and subtract faster, compose more complex sentences, and increase his or her reading and speaking vocabularies. Your child will develop both a deeper and a broader understanding of the sciences. He or she will learn to identify and value people from many different cultures. Math becomes something more logical and interconnected, not just a group of various facts. Math is still largely concrete in second grade, but abstract ideas and concepts are beginning to come into view. This is a very rich year, academically, and an important time for your child's development as a thinker and a learner.

Your second-grader is also continuing to learn a lot about being a person. Second graders learn more about being friends to others, about being good group members, and about being well-behaved in school. You can help by discussing the value of respect. Talk about how relationships work among friends and with teachers at school. With a little regular encouragement, most second graders are ready to take on the world!

Additional Information About 2nd Grade

The Specials
Please note that this year there are some important changes with the Specials. The Physical Education schedule is being reduced, and the Art program is being expanded.

Challenge
When Ms. Keys takes over in the afternoon, Ms. Kraybill doesn't take the rest of the day off! Instead, she becomes our school's Challenge teacher. She offers alternative or supplemental instruction to qualifying students – probably about one hour a week in the afternoons. If you have a question about who qualifies and why, please talk to her. She will most often work with Challenge students in our classroom. She may also sometimes take these students to Room A-1b for a separate learning activity.

Special Education/PD Center
As with Ms. Kraybill and the Challenge students, at our school there are teachers and staff members who work with our L.D. studneets (that is, our mild-moderate learning disabled students) or P.D. students (our physically disabled students). They will sometimes work in our classrooms and sometimes in their own rooms (A-0 or A-1a).

Bromwell Eagles Always Care
The B.E.A.C. program, in past years, was our school's character-education initiative. The B.E.A.C. committee was a team of parents and teachers who helped integrate character ed programming into our classroom activities, usually on a weekly basis. Many of the parents who have spear-headed this work in the past, however, have now moved on -- as have the principals and teachers who were involved. We hope the program can make a comeback, and we are particularly interested in finding parent volunteers to help bring it into classrooms this year.

From the Principal

The B-6 classroom is a model learning environment where high expectations are set and then met on a regular basis.

Ms. Kraybill is a repected member of the faculty and brings professional interactions to the forefront on a consistent basis. Her literacy instruction is engaging, interesting, and ultimately rewarding for her students. She is also a reliable expert in her leadership in the gifted and talented program.

Mrs. Keys' dedication to her students and to the faculty is demonstrated daily. Her mathematics and science lessons include high expectations for her students and higher-order thinking skills. She brings a positive and joyful energy to the classroom.

Together, Ms. Keys and Ms. Kraybill are a great team!
