Poems from 1999 - 2003

INTRODUCTION by Kathryn, 3rd grade
Lots of writers love to write poetry, like Shel Silverstein, and lots of Bromwell students love to write poetry too. This is a selection of Bromwell poetry for the students who love to write poetry and share it with others.

Artscan7:

WHAT IS POETRY? by Elliot, 3rd grade
Poetry is words. Poetry is silent, poetry is loud, poetry is hard, poetry is soft. Poetry is mean, and angry, and grumpy, and stubborn, and poetry is happy. I like poetry!

MY STICK by Elsa, 1st grade
I have a little stick
It makes me feel happy
...and sometimes sad.
A flower blooms into a story
Little people in your sight
The rain forest is their home
Colorful, beautiful, exciting
I have a little stick
...it is special just to me.

THE WORLD by Zoe, 2nd grade
What will happen to our
crowded dirty world?
What will be spared?
What will not?
Not even something like a dot in the
middle of your eye.
Everyone is asking that question --
even a small baby in a mother's
tummy.
No one knows the answer but for now --
it's just silence.

Artscan1:

SOCCER by Charlie, 4th grade
Soccer, soccer, the magical sport.
The more you play the better you get.
The better you get the better the chance
you have to win.
So you should play soccer before every meal.

THE COLOR RED by Blaine, 4th grade
Red is the fire in your eyes when you are mad.
Red is the color of strength
And the power that carries you along.
It is the color of somebody's blood
Drizzling out of a scrape or cut.
It is the color of your mean thoughts.
It is the color of your heart and soul
When you are sad and upset,
When you have been insulted
Or had your feelings hurt.

Fast, red wheelchair
Broken all the TIME
Powerful, black
Comfortable to sit.
-- Judson, 5th grade

Artscan2:

SNOW by Erik, 3rd grade
Snow is spreading over the land.
Snow is here.
Snow is snow.

Snow is peaceful.
Snow is quiet.
Snow is snowballs.

Snow is sadness, snow is happiness.
Snow is beauty.
Snow is white.
Snow is bright.

Snow is falling.
Snow is whiting out
all the bad,
regrettable things we have done.

Snow is digging out my true personality;
snow is taking over me
like a thought that is haunting me
to get out
and let the whole world know:

Snow is who just wrote this poem,
Snow is ME!

Snowflakes are falling
from the gray and cloudy sky
When they fall, they fall softly
-- Jamal, 5th grade

The sun glints off waves
Waves lap against golden shores
The beach is peaceful
-- Madeleine, 5th grade

Artscan4:

THE RIGHT WAY TO GO TO THE SHORE by Natalie, 3rd grade
The right way to go to the shore
is to take the path of the posies
and lilies and pansies and periwinkle and rosies
and more vines
and thymes
than the rainforest.
The wrong way to go to the shore
is to take the path right home to your door.

WHAT IS GOLD? by Taylor, 4th grade
Gold is the color of an angel's hair.
Gold is the color of a juicy pear,
Gold can be found in the hills,
And with all the Gold you can pay your bills!

Acting
Memorizing parts
Speaking very clearly
Behaving like another person
Talent
-- Claire, 4th grade

WHAT IS GOLD? by Rodney, 4th grade
Gold is the color of bars of gold.
Yellow's mother is gold.
Everybody wishes for a bar of gold.
Gold is sometimes in a rainbow.
Gold is the color of a hubcap on a car.

POTATOES by Ann, 4th grade
They are mashed, cooked
Baked or fried,
Grilled or barbequed,
Whipped or dried.

The potatoes come in so many ways
You could not count them in a year and 5 days.
They're tasty, delicious, yucky or bad.
But in my mind they will always be rad!

THE OREGON TRAIL by Logan, 1st grade
Not knowing what is ahead
as the people move along
They want to get to Oregon
without
dying
on the way

The wind is cold
The land is dry
The rivers are icy

Ooop - hurry up
We have a good chance
to get across

MYSTERY CITY by Ari and Sam, 4th grade
Mystery City do a little dance
The more you put in, the better the chance.
It can't be London, it can't be France...
Stare at the picture, it'll put you in a trance.
Come in each day, and read the clue,
The answer might jump out at you!
It might be big, it might be small,
It could be Minneapolis or St. Paul.
The buildings might give you a hint --
Does it look like the Denver Mint?
Is there a river? Is there a creek?
If you look at the picture you may find what you seek.
Good luck to you! I hope you win!
And if you do, I know you'll grin.

Deer at Balarat
Always eating lots of grass
Looking at us now
-- Jordan, 5th grade

I saw a seagull
The bird flew over my head
Then he saw a fish
-- Chelsea, 5th grade

Artscan3:

IN THE AIR by Adam, 5th grade
I saluted and did the thumbs up
and in three seconds I had taken off in the "U.S.S. Adam"
flying higher and higher in the air
there were jets around me everywhere
soon there was a dot on my radar
I turned on my afterburners
and flew faster than the fastest car
on my right a F-14 fired a missile at the enemy
we split up
on each side three
in two minutes the fight was over --
And on the radio they said,
"Return to base immediately Rover."

Frizzie
Neat, Happy
Swims, Runs, Hops
She is a Scientist.
Cute!
-- Grace, 2nd grade

Spicy
Red, Hot
Smiling, Waving, Running
Having a Hot Day
Pepper
Lucy, 2nd grade

A NEW YEAR by Peter, 4th grade
The honey looks like amber
Sounds quiet on a winter breeze
Feels sticky like glue
Sweeter taste than sugar
The honey of a New Year
Coming soon to me
Celebrate the night
A baby year
Magic like perfume
Apple glistens -- feeling of summer
Cool morning smile
Blue champagne and French chocolate
Dreaming of Spring
Feel the promise
Life silently holds the universe

EARTH by Julie, 2nd grade and Lili, 4th grade
The Earth is wonderful,
Beautiful and sweet.
There's more to the Earth
Than you can see.

EARTH DAY by Olivia, 4th grade and Vikki, 2nd grade
Flowers, plants and much, much more
Growing things that you'll adore.
You should respect the earth each day
If you don't, you will pay
Go, go, outside and plant a tree
For outdoor enjoyment for you and me.

THE COLOR YELLOW by Peter, 4th grade
Yellow is macaroni and cheese,
It may be corn, but definitely not peas.
Yellow may be on a yellow jacket,
It may be on a Wrigley's gum packet.
Yellow may be a piece of paper,
a book, a stamp, but definitely not an old green caper!
Yellow is food coloring or the bright, bright sun.
It's also the look on your face when you're not having fun.
Yellow is a water bottle's top,
Maybe even a cleaning lady's mop.
Yellow can be the most beautiful flower,
I believe yellow has a most special power!

ICE CREAM by Alyssa, 5th grade
Delicious tasting, sweet flavoring, cold to cool you off,
As delicious as banana cream pie itself
Italian Ice

BOOKS by Dawn, 3rd grade
Books books
I like books
I like to read books
I read books everywhere
And no one asks
"Why do you read so much?"

RED by Tyler, 4th grade
Red is the color of fire on a really cold night
Or the flashing of sirens racing out of sight.
It's fast, it's loud, it's winning, it's proud.
It's on shirts,
it's a stripe on a sock
It's a soccer team's name
It's the start of the game.
It's a holiday color,
It makes you feel good.
A tulip blooming in the Spring
A cherry, maraschino or bing!
Red is anger
It's in art, paper and paint.
It's the color of Christmas and the Valentine's saint.

THE SHAKER by Marley, 1st grade

MY WEEKENDS by Josh, 4th grade
On weekends,
I always go outside
Play soccer... Do homework... Read...
Play games with my niece Ellisa
Go with my mom on errands
Off to church on Sunday morning
Knights of Columbus classes
Practice for the play on Christmas Eve
I am a wise man
I can't wait until the play!

THE OCEAN by Chelsea, 5th grade
Your song is treasured and is close to my heart
Your sparkling sand is as good as gold
All the great stories you have told
make me feel young, never old.
But why do you tease me with your beautiful flow?
Someday I'll be part of you
when my story has been told.

Ladybugs on leaves
Butterflies on bright flowers
Roses blooming red
-- Erin, 5th grade

The leaves are falling
On the wet, moist, brown grass
Then they blow away
-- Lynnette, 5th grade

RAIN by Brianna, 2nd grade
Once I asked if I could go out and play in the rain.
My mom said, "No, it would be a pain."
So I said, "What about a game?"
My Mom said, "No it would cost more than a flame."
So I said, "Could I just go to bed?"
My mom said, "That is good, but you have to get fed."

S I C K by Justine, 5th grade
Of course we all know that moms can tell
When you should miss the school bell.
You forgot that there was a test...
Your new teacher is a pest...
Well, we all know what you could do best!
Tell your mom that you're down with flu
That you're feeling poo-poo
That you have a cold
That your lunch must have been old
Because you are absolutely SICK
So while she's taking your temp she walks away
You stick your thermometer under the lamp!
But...
Your mom comes back and sees what you've got --
400 degrees? Oops! You're caught!

BASKETBALL GAME by David, 4th grade
Basketball game
Nuggets and Lakers by name
In the front row
Dan was the show
Nuggets versus Lakers
Lakers the takers
Taking the Nuggets ball
The crowd shouted in the hall
Yet when the game was done
Nuggets skill had won

Love is in a pattern.

SUGGESTED POETRY BOOKS by Kathryn, 3rd grade
Here are some great poetry books for you to consider. Shel Silverstein's book "Falling Up" is a book filled with silly poetry and great pictures. He also wrote "Where the Sidewalk Ends." "A Child's Garden of Verses" by Robert Louis Stevenson is a great poetry book for people who like dramatic poems. Finally, "The New Kid on the Block" is a book that has silly poems in it like "Falling Up" and "Where the Sidewalk Ends."
