B-2: Ms. O' Connor's First Grade Classroom

B-1 image: B-1 romm art...

Welcome to my classroom! I'm always very excited
to start a new school year and to begin making
great memories with my students.
First Grade is, without a doubt, the best year of all!

Life in First Grade

Parents, we all know it's a big step from Kindergarten to first grade. First graders are becoming more independent and more adaptable, too. The school day is a little more demanding, and homework is a little more complicated. Of course, first grader have a lot of energy! As the year goes on, first graders learn more about expressing their thoughts and feelings. They also learn how to better respect others and participate in groups. First graders find out that mistakes are not the end of the world, but a part of the learning process.

In my classroom, students will build upon their accomplishments from Kindergarten. They will learn to identify more sight words, and to print words legibly with proper capitalization. They will distinguish between the main idea and details in stories, and they will recall the sequence of events n oral and written stories. Students will count higher than every before, they'll add and subtract, and they will use tools to think about mathematics. My first graders will make more detailed observations of the natural world, and become more thoughtful about their own lives.

Life is interesting, fun, and full of learning in first grade. Your young student will have a great time in my classroom!

A Bit About Me

I have been teaching for 22 years and continue to love it very, very much!  My credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Education, a Master of Arts in Educational Counseling, and I hold two Colorado Department of Education licensures in both areas.  I am also the designated ELA teacher for the first grade teaching team here at Bromwell and will complete this University of Colorado-Denver graduate program in May 2010.

I am blessed and humbled by the special people in my life:  my son, Jordan Young (27), his wife, Jenni (26), and my daughters, Melissa Young (24), and Megan Young (22).  They are each so amazing, beautiful, intelligent, loving, talented, kind, considerate and well….you get the idea! J  I am crazy about them!

There is also a very special friend in my life:  my Siamese cat, Sam O’Connor.  He is my good buddy, is in charge of the scary spiders that live in my basement, and is a pretty fair guard-cat!   Your children will enjoy many updates about Sam and his silly personality.

I hope your child will find their first grade experience to be interesting, fun, and full of learning.  From beginning to end, you and I will be amazed as we watch them blossom right before our eyes!
