Welcome to second grade, and to my classroom. Second grade is a very important year. Students become more and more responsible for their own learning. You will read bigger books, write longer stories, and work on more interesting science projects and math puzzles. In each case, whether the word is "bigger," "longer," or "more interesting," what it means is that it will be more fun for you. Second grade is great!

Here are some fun activities to help you get ready for the first day of school:

Go to the public library, join the summer reading program, and read, read, read!

Play games that involve numbers: count money, tell time, practice addition and subtraction facts.

Practice your handwriting. Know how to read and write the upper and lower case letters. If you go on a trip, keep a journal. Then add some pictures, and VOILA, you are an author and illustrator of a travelogue. "Voila," by the way, is a French word that means "There you have it!" and is often used by magicians and waiters at fancy restaurants. A travelogue is a book about traveling, and travelogues are enjoyed by everybody, not just magicians and waiters. I love travelogues, and so do most second graders.

Even after school begins, I recommend you keep up with these activities. Reading, playing math games, and writing in a journal are three ways to help yourself become a strong and successful student.

During this year, we will travel together through the world of education. I am very happy to be traveling with you on this journey. It will be a rewarding year!

What are second-graders really like?

A typical second-grader is beginning to calm down a bit. He or she is learning to concentrate and focus more in class, and finds satisfaction in doing good schoolwork, too. Students at this age are becoming better at reasoning and thinking critically. They are also learning the real ins and outs of group membership, both in the classroom and on the playground. Children in second grade develop a greater sense of responsibility. It's a very important year, full of developmental and academic milestones.

There's lots of review in second grade, so that students truly master all the skills presented by their first grade teachers. Your child will also learn to recognize familiar words more rapidly, read and spell new words, add and subtract faster, compose more complex sentences, and increase his or her reading and speaking vocabularies. Your child will develop both a deeper and a broader understanding of the sciences. He or she will learn to identify and value people from many different cultures. Math becomes something more logical and interconnected, not just a group of various facts. Math is still largely concrete in second grade, but abstract ideas and concepts are beginning to come into view. This is a very rich year, academically, and an important time for your child's development as a thinker and a learner.

Your second-grader is also continuing to learn a lot about being a person. Second graders learn more about being friends to others, about being good group members, and about being well-behaved in school. You can help by discussing the value of respect. Talk about how relationships work among friends and with teachers at school. With a little regular encouragement, most second graders are ready to take on the world!
