Our Library and Technology Program

LMC image: Straighten up those books!

The library...
Hundreds of books
for reading and thinking.
It has to be quiet,
so I can
think!
by Zoe, 1st grade

The library is full of computers.
I see red computers
I see green and blue computers
purple computers, too.
I also see
books of all sizes and shapes and colors.

INTRODUCTION

At Bromwell Elementary, we have a special program that combines library and technology skills. We've tried calling this program by a number of new names, but none of them have stuck. "Integrated Research" has seemed to come closest to what actually happens in the program, but that sounds a bit formal and stiff for elementary school children, doesn't it? So usually the kids just stick with "library" or "computer lab."

But don't be fooled! The lab and the library are actually the same place, the big open room in the center of the school. As you enter, you'll see shelves of books on every side, with four rows of computers in the center. Typically, our classwork follows the lay-out and goes "from the outside in" -- we begin with the books and then go to the computers. Students may read fairy tales and then create a fairy-tale slideshow on the computers with the Kidpix program. Or they may read about the evolution of the space program and then create a spreadsheet in Clarisworks that compares the ranges of different rockets. Of course, students often use the Internet to go to author's home pages, on-line museums, and other intriguing sites.

There are no mandated standards for this kind of program, and there is no pre-set curriculum, but there are related standards that we draw together to create our own set of guidelines. The "DPS Library Media Scope and Sequence" and the "DPS Department of Technological Services Vital Technology Skills" are matched and referenced with the Colorado Content Standards, and this framework underlies my lessons and activities.

You are welcome to drop by anytime and see what's happening in the library. Or the lab. Or wherever!

YOUR LIBRARIAN/TECHNOLOGY TEACHER

Your librarian and technology teacher is Mr. Allan Cutler, who moved from San Fransisco with his wife and baby daughter. Allan has previously been a librarian as well as a classroom teacher, and is also an actor and musician.

SPECIAL LIBRARY EVENTS

The Library hosts a number of special events during the school year. For example, we usually have a couple of "RIF" days. "RIF" stands for "Reading Is Fundamental" and it is a program co-sponsored by our PTSA that gives free books to children to encourage reading. We also host the Bromwell Book Exchange every Spring, during which kids swap their old-but-good books for old-but-good books brought in by other kids.

The library also sponsors the Bromwell Birthday Book Club. When a book is donated to the library in honor of a student's birthday, that student will receive a letter signed by all the teachers.

LIBRARY MOMS

Our "Library Moms" are the true-blue volunteers (joined by the occasional "Library Dad") who help operate and maintain the library. Some Library Moms come during their son or daughter's class library period. They may help children select books, assist them as they work on writing and art activities or at the computer, or run the check-out table. Other moms come in the morning to help put returned books back on the shelves, or to do perform a variety of tasks from book repair to printing out overdue notices. Library Moms may come every week or once a month, they may volunteer for a few minutes or for longer -- the schedule and the activities are up to each volunteer. Please consider becoming a library volunteer yourself!
