East o' the Sun and West o' the Moon

SCENE 1. A POOR COTTAGE

Narrator: Once upon a time there was a very poor man...

(FATHER COMES OUT ONSTAGE, LOOKING MISERABLE)

Narrator: And he had very poor wife and they had very many children.

(MOTHER COMES OUT ONSTAGE WITH A BUNCH OF KIDS. MOTHER LOOKS VERY TIRED)

Narrator: The best one of all was their youngest daughter.

(GIRL COMES OUT ONSTAGE, OTHER KIDS EXIT)

Father: What a night! How dark and stormy it is!

Mother: The wind is going to shake our cabin down!

Girl: I'm frightened!

Father: Wait! Now all of a sudden it's become quiet...

Mother: How strange! This is even more frightening!

Girl: Who's that coming to our door? Oh! It's a white bear!

(THE BEAR COMES ONSTAGE)

Mother: A White Bear! AAH! (MOTHER COWERS -- GIRL COWERS BY HER)

White Bear: Good evening to you.

Father: Th-th-the same to you.

Bear: Will you give me your youngest daughter in marriage? If you will, I'll make you as rich as you are now poor.

Narrator: Now the father knew magic when he heard it, and oh, how he would love to be rich! But still, he had to talk to his daughter first. So he asked the White Bear to wait while they discussed the proposal.

(BEAR GOES OFFSTAGE -- MOTHER STILL COWERING)

Father: Please marry him?

Girl: No!

Father: Think of all the riches you'll have!

Girl: No!

Father: You'll be so well off!

Girl: No!

Father: Think of how happy we all shall be!

Girl: No! Oh, well... well... no!

Father: Pretty Please?

Girl: Oh...

Father: Pretty Please with a cherry and chocolate syrup on top?

Girl: Well, all right...!

Father: (DANCES WITH JOY) I'M RICH! I'M RICH... I'M RICH... I'M RICH...

(DANCES OFF -- GIRL ALL ALONE)

SCENE 2. THE WHITE BEAR'S CASTLE

(TWO PLAYERS TAKE COTTAGE AWAY -- PUT UP BACKDROP OF GARDEN)

Narrator: And so they were married.

(BEAR COMES OUT PUTS RICH SHAWL ON GIRL)

Narrator: The bear took her far away, to a beautiful castle. The castle was filled with gold and silver, and she had everything she wanted. But it was just the two of them there. And every night the White Bear vanished, and she never knew where he went. And something else would happen, something strange and mysterious...

(TWO PLAYERS HOLD UP BLACK SHEET AND CROSS THE STAGE IN FRONT OF GIRL) (MUSIC)

Narrator: Otherwise, things went along happily, but at last the girl began to feel sad. The Bear noticed, and asked her --

Bear: What is it you want?

Girl: I long to see my father and mother, and brothers and sisters. That's why I'm so sad and sorrowful, because I miss them.

Bear: Well, well! I can take you to them for a short visit. But you must promise me one thing. Never talk alone to your mother! She'll try to get you alone to talk. You must not do that, or else you'll bring bad luck on us both!

SCENE 3. A GRAND HOUSE

(TWO PLAYERS SWITCH THE BACKDROP, SHOW THE OTHER SIDE)

Narrator: So the White Bear took her to a grand house.

Bear: This is where your father and mother live now, but don't forget what I told you.

Girl: No, bless me, I'll not forget!

(BEAR GOES OFFSTAGE)

Narrator: They were so happy to see her, and she was so happy to see them.

(MOTHER AND FATHER AND SIBLINGS COME OUT TO GREET HER -- THEN FATHER DANCES OFF AGAIN, STILL ENJOYING HIMSELF)

Father: I'M RICH! I'M RICH... I'M RICH... I'M RICH...

Narrator: They wanted to know how about her new life.

Girl: It is a very good life. I have all I wish.

(OTHER KIDS GO OFF)

Narrator: But there was someone who didn't settle for that answer!

Mother: Come with your mother, we need to talk!

Girl: Oh, what we have to talk about will keep!

Mother: Come on, just tell me, it can't be that bad...

Girl: No, thank you.

Mother: Please? I want to help you with your problems.

Girl: Well, every night, the bear disappears. And when I have gone to bed, a man comes and sleeps there in the dark. I never see him, because he is always up and away before the morning dawns. I feel woeful and full of sorrow, for I would so like to see him. All day long I walk about alone -- how dull, and dreary, and lonesome it is!

Mother: Oh no! It may be a Troll! But now I'll tell you what to do. Take a bit of candle, and carry it home in your pocket. Just light it while he is asleep, and you'll see everything. But take care not to drop any wax on him.

Girl: All right, and thank you!

SCENE 4. THE WHITE BEAR'S CASTLE AGAIN

(SWITCH THE BACKDROP AGAIN -- BACK THE WAY IT WAS AT FIRST. THE BEAR REJOINS DAUGHTER ONSTAGE)

Narrator: So she went back to the castle...

Bear: Did all happen as I said it would?

Girl: I can't say it didn't...

Bear: Now, mind, if you have listened to your mother's advice, you'll have brought bad luck on us both. Then, all that has passed between us will be as nothing.

Girl: No, I didn't listen to my mother's advice...

Narrator: That night, as always, someone came into her room, and fell asleep.

(TWO PLAYERS HOLD UP BLACK SHEET OR BANNER AND CROSS THE STAGE IN FRONT OF DAUGHTER & BEAR. HOLD STILL FOR A MOMENT WHILE BEAR SWITCHES COSTUMES AND BECOMES THE PRINCE...THEN LAY THE BANNER DOWN ON THE FLOOR -- REVEALING THE PRINCE LYING ASLEEP AND DAUGHTER KNEELING BY HIM) (MUSIC)

Narrator: She struck the candle, and let the light shine on him. There was the handsomest Prince you could ever see. She fell deeply in love with him right then and there. But she wasn't careful, and three hot drops of wax fell on his shirt.

Prince: OW! (JUMPS UP)

Girl: OH! (JUMPS BACK)

Prince: Ow! Ow! Ow!

Girl: Oh! Oh! Oh!

Prince: What have you done? If only you had waited one year, then I'd have been free. I was bewitched, so that I was a White Bear by day, and a Man by night. Now you have brought bad luck on us both and we must part. I must go to the castle that is EAST O' THE SUN AND WEST O' THE MOON.

Everyone: EAST O' THE SUN AND WEST O' THE MOON!

Girl: No!

Prince: And there, too, is a Troll Princess, and she's the one I must marry now!

Girl: Can't you stay just for a fortnight?

Prince: There is no help for it, I must go!

Girl: Then might I go with you?

Prince: No, you might not!

Girl: Tell me the way, then, and I'll search you out; that surely I may get leave to do!

Prince: But there is no way to this place. It lies EAST O' THE SUN AND WEST O' THE MOON...

Everyone: EAST O' THE SUN AND WEST O' THE MOON...

Prince: And you'll never find your way!

Everyone: NEVER... NEVER... NEVER...

(DAUGHTER FALLS IN A HEAP -- PRINCE PULLS OFF HER RICH SHAWL AND RUNS OFF. TWO PLAYERS TAKE AWAY THE BANNER) (MUSIC)

SCENE 5. THE GIRL'S JOURNEY

Narrator: The next morning, when she woke up, both the Prince and the castle were gone. She got up and began walking, and she walked and walked...

(HAG COMES OUT, SPILLS HER BAG)

Hag: Drat! Now I've spilled all my things!

Girl: Oh! Hello! Let me help you!

Hag: Why thank you, and here's a gold apple for your trouble!

Girl: Oh, it was no trouble... but thank you very much! You are most kind!

Hag: I've traveled far and wide, but there's not many who've stopped to help me when I needed it!

Girl: Really? Far and wide? Say... Do you know the way to the Prince, who lives with in the castle that lies EAST O' THE SUN AND WEST O' THE MOON? The one who is to marry a Troll Princess?

Hag: How did you come to know about him? But maybe you are the lassie who ought to have had him instead?

Girl: Yes, I am, ma'am.

Hag: So, it's you, is it? Well, all I know about him is, that he lives in the castle that lies EAST O' THE SUN AND WEST O' THE MOON, and there you'll come, late or never. But all this talking is making me thirsty!

Girl: Oh! Here! Have some water, please!

Hag: Such nice manners! Here, you deserve this golden carding-comb. You might be just the kind of girl to find a use for it.

Girl: Thank you, I'm sure.

Hag: Now, where was I? Oh, the castle! I have an old friend who may be able to help you -- the North Wind himself! He's blown here and there in his travels. Maybe he knows where it is!

Girl: Really? The North Wind himself?

Hag: The very same! But you're not scared are you?

Girl: Well, a little... but I must find my prince! Please tell me what to do!

Hag: I tell you what -- I'll walk you there myself! I'm going that way anyway. But before we go, let me give you one more gift, just for luck -- a gold spinning-wheel! Here, take it! No, don't thank me! Let's just get going before I change my mind!

Girl: Yes, ma'am.

(THEY WALK -- NORTH WIND COMES OUT)

North Wind: BLAST YOU BOTH, WHAT DO YOU WANT?

Hag: Well, you needn't be so foul-mouthed, for it's me, your only friend! This is the lass who ought to have had the Prince who dwells in the castle that lies EAST O' THE SUN AND WEST O' THE MOON. And she wants to ask you if you ever were there, and can tell her the way.

North Wind: YES, I KNOW WELL ENOUGH WHERE IT IS!

Hag: Well, get on with it then! As for me, I'm going back the way I came! I don't have to put up with all this noise!

North Wind: Once in my life I blew an aspen-leaf there. It made me so tired I couldn't blow a puff for ever so many days after. But if you really wish to go, and aren't afraid to come along with me, I'll take you and see if I can blow you there.

Girl: Yes, with all my heart! I must and will get there if it is possible in any way. As for fear, I won't be afraid however madly you fly.

North Wind: Very well, then.

Narrator: The North Wind puffed himself up, and blew himself out, and made himself so stout and so big it was gruesome to see. And off they went high into the air. They went on and on, and on and on, and finally they made it! They landed right under the windows of the castle which lays EAST O' THE SUN AND WEST O' THE MOON.

Everyone: EAST O' THE SUN AND WEST O' THE MOON! (MUSIC)

SCENE 6. THE CASTLE EAST O' THE SUN AND WEST O' THE MOON

(GERARDO AND JORDAN TAKE DOWN THE BACKDROP, AND PUT UP THE CASTLE)

Narrator: The North Wind was so tired, but he made it home somehow.

North Wind: I'm exhausted!... I can't even walk!... I'm so tired!...

(NORTH WIND GOES OFFSTAGE)

Narrator: The girl sat under a window of the castle, and played with her gold apple.

Troll Princess: OOOOOH! Look at that! Look at that! What do you want for your gold apple, girl? Hmm? Hmm? What do you want? Hmm?

Girl: It's not for sale, for gold or money.

Troll Princess: If it's not for sale for gold or money, what is it that you will sell it for? Hmmm? You may name your own price. Hmm?

Girl: Well, If I may get to the Prince, who lives here, and sit with him through the night, you shall have it.

Troll Princess: Hmmm... Hmmm... Yes, that can be done!

(PRINCE COMES OUT & LAYS DOWN ON STAGE)

Narrator: That night she went up to the Prince. But he was fast asleep. She called to him, and shook him, but he did not wake up.

Girl: Wake up, you lazybones! Wake up!

Narrator: The next morning the Troll Princess drove her away, but she sat under the castle window again, and took out her golden carding-comb.

Troll Princess: What do you want for your gold carding-comb, girl? Hmm? Hmm?

Girl: It's not for sale, for gold or money.

Troll Princess: What is it that you will sell it for? Hmmm? You may name your own price.

Girl: Well, If I may get to the Prince, and sit with him through the night, you shall have it.

Troll Princess: Yes, that can be done!

Narrator: So she went up to the Prince, but again, he would not awaken.

Girl: Wake up! Why won't you wake up?

Narrator: The next morning she was driven out again, but she had one more trick up her sleeve!

Troll Princess: Oh! What do you want for your gold wheel, girl? Hmm?

Girl: It's not for sale, for gold or money, but if I might sit by the Prince you shall have it.

Troll Princess: Yes! You might do that and be welcome!

Narrator: Now, the castle was full of Trolls, of course, but there some poor folk there who had been caught by the Trolls and put in the dungeon. That day they called out to the Prince when he walked by --

(PRINCE STANDS UP & WALKS A BIT AS THE PRISONERS WALK OUT)

Prisoner 1: Sire!

Prisoner 2: We have heard a woman come to you in the night

Prisoner 3: And she weeps and prays over you!

Prisoner 1: This has happened for two nights in a row!

Prisoner 3: Why don't you speak to her?

Prisoner 2: Why don't you answer her?

All Three Prisoners: Why? Why?

(THE PRISONERS WALK OFF)

Prince: Every night the Troll Princess gives me a drink to help me sleep better. It must be a sleeping potion! Tonight I'll pretend to drink it, but really I'll pour it down the drain instead!

Narrator: .And that's what he did! So as darkness fell, the Prince remained awake.

Girl: You're awake! I'm so glad to see you!

Prince: Ah, it's you! You've come just in the nick of time, for tomorrow is to be my wedding to the troll!

Girl: Together we can think of something!

Prince: Hmmm -- let's make a plan...

(THEY LEAVE WHISPERING)

Narrator: The next morning the Troll King came to the Prince...

(TROLL KING, TROLL PRINCESS, SIDEKICK, AND EXTRA TROLL COME OUT)

Troll King: Now it's time for the wedding!

Sidekick: Yeah! It's time for the wedding!

(PRINCE COMES OUT, BRINGS OUT A WASH TUB -- HE'S ALSO HOLDING THE SHIRT)

Prince: Not so fast! First of all, I'd like to see what my bride can do.

Troll King: What do you mean?

Sidekick: Yeah, what do you mean?

Prince: Well, I've got a fine shirt which I'd like to wear to the wedding, but it has three spots of wax on it. I won't marry anyone except the girl who can wash that shirt clean!

Troll King: Well, that is no great thing. Daughter! Wash this shirt!

Sidekick: Yeah! Wash this shirt!

Troll Princess: Arrr! This isn't working!

Troll King: You can't wash, let me try!

Sidekick: Yeah, let him try!

Troll King: This is hard! Everyone! Come help me!

Sidekick: Yeah, come help him!

Troll King: I give up!

Sidekick: Yeah, I give up!

Troll Princess: Never! Keep trying!

Prince: Ah! You're none of you worth a straw! Why there, outside, sits a beggar girl, and I'll be bound she knows how to wash better than any of you. COME IN, LASS!

Girl: What would you want with me?

Prince: Can you wash this shirt clean?

Girl: I don't know, but I think I can.

Prince: Yes! You are the wife for me!

Troll King: We've been tricked! Get him!

Sidekick: Get him!

(CHASE SCENE -- the prince and the girl leap off the stage and run into the audience. The trolls follow with much slapstick falling and bumping into each other. Finally the tempo of the chase builds as they players run back up on stage.)

(FIGHT SCENE -- the prince and the girl fight with the trolls -- the odds are against them until the narrator joins in -- then they finish off the trolls with ease)

Narrator: And that took care of the trolls! As for the Prince and Princess, they set free all the poor folk who were trapped there, and they took all the silver and all the gold, and they lived happily ever after -- far away from the castle that lay EAST O' THE SUN AND WEST O' THE MOON!

Everyone: EAST O' THE SUN AND WEST O' THE MOON!

Hag: THE END! (MUSIC)
