Our Music Program
Hello, Parents and Students at Bromwell! First, let me express to you what an honor it is to teach our students at Bromwell. Bromwell is a wonderful place to work and to learn. Our students come from diverse environments, skill sets, and interests. The music program at Bromwell reflects this diversity to allow all our students to learn from our teaching, but also for the students to learn from each other. The music program at Bromwell is based on the five content standards developed by the state of Colorado and adopted by DPS. These standards reflect the various skills that have been traditionally addressed in music classrooms. They include: 1. Students will sing and/or play alone or with others. Each music class will utilize several of these content standards. A typical primary class might begin with echo clapping and/or echo singing, a warm-up song that may include a round or other type of part-song, written examples to develop music reading skills, a listening game, a review song, and a new song. We usually end with a movement activity that includes listening. Special focus is paid to high-interest activies. A typical intermediate class will begin with more advanced music reading and then will feature a more exhaustive lesson that may include singing, listening, creating, or relating music to other aspects of culture. For example, a recent Fifth Grade unit addressed the life and music of American composer, Aaron Copland. It included listening and describing "Fanfare for a Common Man" and "Hoedown" from Copland's ballet, Rodeo, a 30-minute film biography of Copland featuring the composer's own account of his life followed by his rehearsing the National Symphony Orchestra in his First Symphony, and two additional assignments that featured activites to provide reinforcement to the information that has been presented in class. While learning is the focus of our music classroom, having a good time is important to us, also. Classes feature music games and movement activites that keep things interesting and fun. Primary classes use activites like "Stop to the Music", "Stars and Fish", and "The Whisper Game" to help develop skills, and intermediate classes use "Pass the Eraser", Tinikling dancing, and other activites like "Popcorn" to keep things hopping. All activites are designed to reinforce an aspect of the students' musical study. Music programs at Bromwell support our teachers' classroom activities. Last year, our Second Grade produced a wondeful program of American music and culture. Intermediate classes performed at Multi-Cultural Night with songs that reflected American history in a variety of ways. We also support the Missoula Children's Theater with our singing and acting skills and Mr. Lassen's accompaniment. We traditionally perform at our Fifth Grader's Continuation celebration and traditionally perform a Holiday Concert just before our Winter Break. Bromwell has an excellent Physical Disabilities program. Our music program supports these students in a number of ways. We do our best to get our PD students "out of their chairs" every chance we get. We allow them a chance to be successful in a different, but intellectually and creatively rigorous setting. Our PD students are a wonderful asset to Bromwell teachers and students. They teach us something new every day. We work with Ms. Campell and the excellent paras from A-0 for letting us include these great kids.
It's really wonderful working at both Bromwell and at DSA. Both schools are the greatest! I get to work with kids at all skill and age levels Please feel free to contact me any time you have questions about music at Bromwell. My email address is ted_lassen@dpsk12.org. This year's music schedule |
