In April, 2000, the Second Graders from B-5 took part in the DPS Shakespeare Festival and won a special judge's award. Here is their story, as published in The Bromwell Blabber...

2nd GRADERS AT THE SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL

We started at 9:18 when we got on the bus and we arrived at the festival at 9:35. We split into about five groups. Bill, Addie, Maddie and I were in the same group. We went into the mall and got one small cookie. Then after we stayed inside for a little bit, then we went outside and it was our turn. -- Kyle

When I introduced The Tempest I was kind of nervous. I remember when I did the sonnet. I was still kind of nervous. I remember when I went through the parade. I felt sort of nervous. But I laughed. I kind of liked it. -- Tate

There was a big parade and I was squooshed! Then it was time for all the schools to perform. We did Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, and Sonnet Number 18. -- Marlowe

I freaked out at how cold it was. I thought the plays were great, so great I couldn't decide which one I liked best. -- Emma

We were probably the youngest there! At 9:35 we got there and got in a really big line and banged instruments and waved sticks with ribbons. After that we went and saw other performances (by teenagers and younger). Finally at 11:32 our first performance -- A Midsummer Night's Dream. After that my group went inside. At 12:06 The Tempest went and after that I got nervous. Mine was next! At 12:48 Romeo and Juliet went. It was sort of strange, six Juliets and one Romeo! Then we all did Sonnet Number 18. Then at 1:32 we did them all together! And a guild master gave us blue ribbons. -- Cassie

The Shakespeare Festival was really fun but I was very very nervous but excited, too. Then I finally went up it was awfully cold but I managed to not shiver or fold my arms around me. Then I said "William Shakespeare Sonnet Number 18," and then I stood back and said my other lines that were: "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, and summer's lease hath all too short a date." -- Laiah

I was Quince in A Midsummer Night's Dream. It was fun (even though I had to play a boy!). -- Abby

We had so much fun! And we all had an exciting time performing on the Blackfriar's Stage. -- Mariah

Did you see Second graders do Shakespeare? It was outstanding! The plays were A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest, and Romeo and Juliet. Oh, and did I mention the sonnet? It was great too! When the performers were on the Blackfriar's Stage, it was on fire! -- Jarrett

We did very very good. On the way back to school we were still saying lines. -- Calley

We had lots of fun. I was in the Sonnet Number 18. I did a good job. I hope you saw me. --Wylie

Here's the story of another Bromwell award winner...

THE YOUNG AUTHORS AWARD
by Alex, 4th grade, Class of 1999
Every year two awards are given at every school in the Denver Public Schools. One goes to a person in the primary grades and one to a person in the intermediate grades. The award is given to the two children with the bets stories done. Each year the children go to a high school and look at other kids' books. Last year I won the award. Here is my experience. First the other winner Emerson and I went inside George Washington High School ad set up a table with our books. Emerson and I went and looked at other kid's books. People did gymnastics up front. The young authors got to watch. After that a story lady took some authors to another room and told stories. Then we all got to choose our own book in the other room. You also get a medal and a bookmark. So hop to it! Write a book! My story came out of my November journal. By the way it was called "The Scarecrow."

For many years, Bromwell participated in The Odyssey of the Mind. Here are three stories from students about their OM experiences...

OM CONGRATULATIONS
by Rachel, Class of 1997
Bromwell teams really did well in recent OM contests. OM (Odyssey of the Mind) is a team of at least 5 kids. It's an entertaining and fun project! The OM committee creates a bunch of wacky, hard problems for teams to solve. Each team selects one problem. On competition day your team does a small skit demonstrating the solution. Also involved with OM competition is "Spontaneous." During spontaneous you get a problem like, What makes fire? You can give the most "Out-of-wack" answer in a certain amount of time. Bromwell teams REALLY did well!!!

2nd grade: Math Party. Mr. Matchett said they were Bromwell's best.

3rd Grade: Time Traveler. They did very but they did not go to World.

4th Grade: Scientific Safari. They got an OMER award for 1st place in Spontaneous.

5th Grade: Time Traveler. They won third place. They also continued their journey to state. They did very well too, but didn't make it to World.

MY MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT
by Justine, Class of 1997
My most nervous moment was not at school, but it was a school activity. It was my OM skit in Third Grade. We go to George Washington High School (that's where the OM competition takes place). Well, anyway, we got there and went into our designated room where we kept all our stuff.

The first activity we did was Spontaneous. I did not do this. Neither did Alexandra. (Oh, yeah! I forgot to mention this: there were three boys and four girls on our team. The boys were Charlie, William R. and Jonathan. The girls were Danielle, Alexandra, Caitlin and who else? Me!)
After Spontaneous was over we went out to lunch. We then went back to George Washington and did our skit. Our skit had to be about the present, past, and future. Our skit had three scenes. The first scene took place in a classroom. Jonathan was the judge and the four kids (including me) were doing a spontaneous game. We rolled the dice and the judge read the space out loud. The space had to do with Molly Brown.

Then all the kids ran behind the backdrop and got ready for the next scene. The next scene was the judge meeting Molly Brown on the Titanic. The last scene was where he got stuck in the future. We then all ran out and shouted "Time!"

The rest of the day we watched other teams. Finally, when all the skits were done, we had the gathering where they announced the winners. They announced, "Time Travel, for First Place -- there is a tie between Godsman and Bromwell Team B!" That was us! We ran up and got our prizes. Two weeks later we went to the state meet. We didn't place but we did win First in district!

BROMWELL'S O.M. TEAMS
by Jake and Eric, 4th grade, Class of 1998
This year we had 7 teams that participated in Odyssey of the Mind. Odyssey of the Mind is an educational learning process. It is an after-school enrichment class that requires that the kids have to work together to solve a problem with two or more coaches. Three of the Bromwell teams that participated made it to state. State is a higher level of competition to which only the top four teams go.

Teams perform a skit which answers the question they were given. For instance, some of the teams had to make a working robot that could do six human-like things. After you perform your skit, you have to do "Spontaneous." Judges give you a unexpected, weird question and the team goes around in a circle and everyone tries to answer the question in two minutes.

We were on one of the teams which made it to state BECAUSE WE ARE GENIUSES!!! YEAH!! The only reason we didn't get First in State is because we think the other teams CHEATED! They probably bribed the judges!!!

But since the other teams cheated, we ended up 7th place. Luckily, we were VERY good sports about it! The Fifth Graders got 3rd. The Second and Third graders came in 19th.

There are two awards that are possible to get one is an Omer award and the other is a Ranatra Fusca award. Our BRILLIANT team got an Omer award and the Fifth Graders team got a Ranatra Fusca award.

There is an award that your whole school can get for having the most teams in O.M. competition. And our school got that award, too. So we had a great year in O.M. this year and hopefully some more of you will join next year.
