Originally from Washington state, Valerie graduated from Gonzaga University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in Spring 2009. She practiced at a rehabilitation hospital in Washington state (working with stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury patients). Valerie started working with DPS after moving to Denver in 2010. In her “free” time, she words with individuals recovering from traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries at Craig Hospital.

Please contact Valerie anytime with questions or health concerns about your child. Information on students with significant health conditions is kept confidential and will only be shared with staff on a need-to-know basis.

Valerie works at Bromwell Mondays and Thursdays.

Rachele Johnson works with children who have communication problems that affect their success in classroom activities, social interaction, literacy, and learning. She works at Bromwell on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rachele is originally from Detroit, Michigan. She received her training at Michigan State University and the University of Toledo.

Shelby Young works with kids on functional living skills, to help them be successful in the classroom setting. She works with them on a variety of skills such as visual motor, visual perception, self-help skills, eye-hand coordination, and fine motor. Shelby grew up in Missouri, and graduated from the University of Missouri. She is at Bromwell on Thursday afternoons, and Fridays all day.

As a School Psychologist for Denver Public Schools, Sherry Horen has a variety of roles and responsibilities related to supporting Bromwell students. She is at Bromwell two days per week and spends much of her time working on issues related to special education compliance.

When time permits, Sherry also works with individual students, small groups, and classrooms to provide intervention services that enhance the academic and social/emotional progress of all children.

My name is Jan Struharik. I am the English Language Acquisition (ELA) teacher. Bromwell has been designated to have an ESL Resource, or pull-out program. The purpose of the program is to help ELA students develop and refine their English language skills in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

I have been teaching ELA for over seven years. Before coming to Colorado, I taught Learning Disabilities in Casper, Wyoming. The University of Missouri is my college alma mater. In my spare time I love to hike, bike, ski, and practice yoga.
