What Gifted and Talented means in DPS
In the Denver Public Schools, “gifted and talented children” means those students whose demonstrated abilities, talents and/or potential for accomplishment are so exceptional or developmentally advanced that they require special provisions to meet their educational needs. These students perform, or show the potential of performing, at remarkably high levels in intellectual, specific academic or creative areas when compared with others of their age and experience. Gifted and talented children are present in all student groups, regardless of gender, disability, English language proficiency, economic status, ethnic or cultural background.
Identifying Students
Identification of gifted students occurs year round in DPS. The gifted and talented teacher at each school monitors student data in several key areas that the district has determined are indicators of giftedness. Students identified as highly gifted have the option of attending a highly gifted magnet school for elementary or middle school. Scores from this battery of tests are also used to identify gifted students. Learn more about gifted and talented services in DPS at https://studentequity.dpsk12.org/gifted-talented/
What does Gifted and Talented look like at Bromwell?
At Bromwell, we establish the foundation of life-long learning for all students, including our highest ability learners. Classroom teachers create inclusive learning opportunities for students within the general education learning environment. In addition to helping classroom teachers monitor student goals and progress, our Gifted and Talented Advisor provides resources and professional development to build capacity within our school. Through real world purposeful learning and projects our students are encouraged to develop their creativity, imagination, and critical thinking skills. We strive to identify strengths within all of our students by addressing and diminishing identification gaps with our underrepresented students. Our affective model encompasses a strong social emotional focus by implementing mindfulness lessons, the Zones of Regulation curriculum, and daily Transformative Social Emotional Awareness Learning (TSEAL) lessons. Bromwell provides a nurturing and engaging environment to guide and develop students’ strengths as learners.
